‘Indian Head’ Gold $5 Half Eagle, 1908 to 1916 and 1929.

Bela Lyon Pratt designed the final version of the Half Eagle in 1908. Specifications of the coin stayed the same; however the front and back designs were altered significantly to match the Quarter Eagle, designed at the same time. Both of these coins are unique in the history of US minting, in that the designs were imprinted incuse rather than raised, that is, the flat surfaces of the coins were the highest points of the design. The front of this Half Eagle shows an American Indian wearing a ceremonial headpiece, and the reverse shows an eagle at rest. Above and below the eagle are inscribed the phrases E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST. Production of this coin was halted due to supply restrictions during the World War 1, and resumed again in 1929.
